2011 Ladera Howell Mountain Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
92 Points - Cellar Tracker
The 2011 Ladera Howell Mountain Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon displays classic characteristics of cooler vintage conditions. Pure fruit expressions of wild berry, currants and ripe plum are highlighted with notes of cassis, cocoa and fresh oak spice. As the wine sits in the glass, it reveals an intriguing mineral element that adds to its appeal. The palate is pure and focused, layered with black fruits, sweet oak, supple tannins and great structure.
The 2011 Ladera Howell Mountain Reserve was sourced exclusively from our estate vineyard located directly opposite the winery at 1,600 to 1,800 feet in elevation. The vineyard sits above the fog line receiving longer sun exposure throughout the growing season. A combination of the high elevation, the red, volcanic and mineral rich soils allows the fruit to achieve full physiological ripeness producing ripe flavorful wines with great structure and exceptional aging potential.
The 2011 harvest provided a lighter and later crop. A wet spring and cooler-than-average summer prolonged the growing season and naturally decreased the crop, resulting in wines with heightened fruit aromas, pronounced depth and elegant structure.
Harvest began on October 23rd and finished on November 3rd, 2011.
The 2011 Ladera Howell Mountain Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the best our vineyard has to offer and delivers the full expression of its mountain origins. Comprised of the most promising lots of the vintage, the grapes were hand sorted, de-stemmed without crushing and cold soaked for 5 days in small open top fermenters to extract maximum fruit characteristics. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon was aged in 93% new premium French oak for 22 months before the final blend was assembled. 2,200 cases were bottled on July 29th, 2013.
